Ostomy

Have you, or a near and dear one gone through a surgery? Do you know of anyone who has been advised an ostomy? Any surgery as we all know can be traumatic, both mentally and physically for the patient as well as their loved ones. So, is having an ostomy any different? The answer is an emphatic “no”. There are distinct kinds of ostomies namely, colostomy, Ileostomy and urostomy.

All these ostomies have a stoma that is created surgically, hence care is of utmost importance for all the patients who have undergone them. In case you are at a loss as to what an ostomy is, and why is it performed, let us help you out with some information. Firstly, an ostomy, is an operation conducted to construct an opening, commonly referred to, or called a stoma, on the lower portion of the stomach for the collection of waste. There are numerous medical conditions that require an ostomy.

A colostomy surgery also commonly called a “bowel diversion surgery” is one such procedure that may either be a temporary or a permanent condition. A patient is usually advised to go in for surgery, in the case of colon cancer, abnormality at birth, trauma, cancer of the rectum or Crohn’s disease to cite a few, when the pain and discomfort of the patient is so severe and an ostomy is the best choice. After undergoing a colostomy, most patients are usually advised to and fitted with a colostomy bag. Since the pouch has and is being used for the collection of waste, colostomy bag care is of extreme importance.

The cleaning of the colostomy bag is a must and once emptied, ensure to rinse it thoroughly with warm water, using a baby soap, and never forgetting to use a disinfectant. An ileostomy is another kind of ostomy performed since body waste is unable to leave the body through the anus and rectum, again, this usually occurs in patients who either suffer from cancer, trauma, Crohn’s disease or an irritable bowel syndrome where the intestines work improperly.

If you are wondering as to what is the best appliance for you? The answer to that is, it varies. Your doctor will advise you on the best appliance to be used depending on the surgery that has taken place. Usually, or in most cases an ostomy bag or a pouch that resembles a bag, is a device used for the collection of waste. It is tailor made as per the patient’s requirement and in such a manner where discomfort upon usage is next to nil.

This bag can be covered or hid by using appropriate clothing. The bag or pouch should be changed often, or at regular intervals, with the stoma being rinsed and cleaned thoroughly using lukewarm water, dry as well as wet wipes, with utmost care and hygiene. Once the new bag is fitted, the old bag can then be disposed appropriately. An ileostomybag or pouch is prescribed to be used by patients post an ileostomy.

The bag is then attached on to stoma or the surgically created opening thus collecting intestinal waste. Another pouching appliance that is commonly used is an urostomybag. Patients who have undergone an urostomy are required to use this. This surgery, is such, where urine is passed out of the body through a stoma or surgical opening. What you should be aware of is that, like any other surgery, post-operative care is imperative in this case too. With all the changes that the body goes through by way of surgery and the use of an ostomy appliance, it is but natural that the patient will require sufficient time to heal, both physically and mentally.

To adapt to the situation or circumstance, to learn to accept and, to handle the ostomy where there will be a change in the way the body functions. What is stoma care or how does one then go about taking care of the stoma? Well, as we now know, the stoma is created during the surgery, helping divert either faeces, urine or both into a pouch or a bag place on the outside and it resembles a bud. Depending on the nature of the ostomy or colostomy, the patient is advised to use bag or pouch.

We then go on to worry about the price and all of that. So, what would a colostomybag price in India be? The cost can and does vary depending on the surgery and the kind of appliance it entails. There are bags or pouches available and ranging from as low as Rs.500 up to as high as Rs.7000. These bags can also be ordered online. Now that you have read it all, put your fears and apprehensions to rest. You can be rest assured that an ostomy is not that big of a deal that you initially thosught it was.
